  • A Dragonlance anthology. My story, "All For A Pint," is the lead, and it was my first professional sale. People actually paid me money for something I thunk up and writ down on paper. And now friends and family are asking for my autograph. Go figure.

Years ago I wrote book reviews for Realms of Fantasy magazine. One of the reviews I wrote during this period was for Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's The Annotated Chronicles. The publisher, Wizards of the Coast, was so happy with my review that they starting using quotes from the review in their publicity materials. (It's very strange to flip through a trade magazine, see an ad for a book I reviewed, and then seeing my words in the advertisement. Strange, but in the best of all possible ways.)

I had met Margaret a few years prior (I bought her lunch while passing through Lake Geneva on a road trip) and so, being on friendly terms, I wrote her an email telling her of the review and the advertisements. She responded by offering me a position in an upcoming anthology. We sent emails back and forth working together on some plot points for "All For A Pint." And of course, she and Tracy (and presumably the in-house editor Patrick McGilligan) did the final tweaking of my story which gave it a nice polish and a bright shine.

I've been told by a few reliable people that my story made them laugh out loud. I'm pretty sure that they'll never know exactly how good hearing that made me feel. Writing is hard work—something that I remember every time I sit down in front of a "new document," and invariably "Exit without saving." So, it may sound corny or cliche, but hearing of someone who enjoyed my story is quite possibly the best thing I've ever heard. If not the best, then it's very, very, very nice to hear.

I'd make a link to one of the many online bookstores, but everyone has their favorite place to shop—either online or in a regular bricks and mortar establishment—and this book can be picked up anywhere Dragonlance books are sold. Go buy it up, flip to page three, and tell me what you think.
